Model Urban Village at Devarabeesanahalli
Rapid urbanization of Bangalore has come at the cost of improper planning of townships and unhygienic living conditions. At SIFF we believe in not just existing, but living – a clean, hygienic community that makes lives a whole lot happier & healthier.
Our Model Urban Village Program aspires to build a sustainable community in Deverabeesanahalli (DB halli), located at Bangalore East. A needs assessment of this former village revealed unhygienic living conditions and inadequate infrastructure as a result of rapid urbanization.
Our program interventions plan to address cleanliness, hygiene, waste management, water management, lake rejuvenation, school education, sports, and energy management. We implement these measures through partnerships with expert organizations, citizens’ groups and corporations around the village.

Cleanliness drive at DBHalli
SIFF supports the clearance of black spots at DB Halli in collaboration with The Ugly Indian (http://www.theuglyindian.com/). The black spots give rise to clogged gutters, bad odor and rodent infestation that could potentially cause diseases. Clearing these black spots is not only aesthetically appealing but also contributes to a better quality of life and efficient use of space.
Spot-fix near DBHalli Lake Road
Before
After
In November 2017, over 40 volunteers from corporations, gated communities, and the village came together. This effort led to a Spot-Fix activity on DB Halli Lake Road connecting the DB Halli Village. The spot was visually transformed in a span of 3 days. It gathered interest and participation from many stakeholders from the surrounding.
The Government school field at DB Halli caters to 150 school children and youngsters from the village. The field was infested with weeds and the terrain used to be undulating. This restricted the students from playing in the school grounds. De-weeding and leveling the field substantially improved the space available for sports.

A makeover of the Anganwadi
The Anganwadi at the DBHalli Village did not have lights or a functional toilet. The space around the Anganwadi was used by kids to relieve themselves. With the help of a few corporate volunteers, the Anganwadi looks more appealing and colorful now. Water supply was enabled for the toilets and a light fixed in the room. By the end of two hours the kids started using the toilets.
